The Annie Singleton Award is one of the most distinguished honors presented by the Alpha Foundation of Southern Maryland (AFOSMD), in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter. Named in tribute to Mrs. Annie C. Singleton, this award celebrates women whose lives reflect service, leadership, and an enduring commitment to uplifting the community — the same values Mrs. Singleton exemplified throughout her life.
Mrs. Annie C. Singleton is affectionately known as the “Mother of Alpha.” In the early 1900s, as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was beginning to take shape. She and her husband, Archie A. Singleton, opened their home in Ithaca, New York, to the Fraternity’s early members. Their home — often referred to as the “Alpha House” — became a central meeting place and safe haven for the young African American men navigating both academic and racial challenges at Cornell University.
Her hospitality, maternal care, and unwavering support provided more than just shelter — she created a nurturing environment that helped cultivate the ideals of scholarship, brotherhood, and service that define Alpha Phi Alpha to this day. Though she was not a member, her contributions left a lasting imprint on the Fraternity’s foundation and culture.
Mrs. Singleton’s legacy is a powerful reminder that behind every great movement are those who give selflessly, lead quietly, and serve boldly.
